colour sense: the sum is greater than the parts

For a while now, I've been trying to put together a post explaining to you why I feel that my friend Kit Lee, photographer and stylist (The Style Slicker) has one of the most advanced 'colour sense' of anyone I know. It's not just colour: it's texture, balance, knowing and breaking the rules.. that's what makes her such a good stylist. (note to all you girls out there who want to be the next Rachel Zoe: there's more to it than being able to shop).

Rather than try to compile a Kit's Greatest Hits, I'm taking it in little chunks. Yesterday, for example. We were talking about how we've only me last February, (sitting in the freezing rain, @ LFW, street shooting), and said with her huge Cheshire cat grin 'Yes, I was wearing the same scarf and hat' and she went on to tell us exactly who and what and why she was texting with at the time. Razor sharp memory: essential.

I have these little rules: Not wild about red on its own, or with black and grey, but add some purple and plum, and I'm in. Same with orange. Orange and black, I wouldn't wear it if you put a gun to my head. But add the hottest pink to that combo, and some camel suede, and Ola! Them's bullfighting colours and I'm in love.

Speaking of: ElleGate is so not over. Au contraire, Pierre. Just not ready to talk about it yet.

I used to be super overweigh as a teenager and wore nothing but black and loose clothes. When I reached the weight I wanted, I started exploring with dresses and colors. I realized that I LOVE colorful clothes and animal patterns, hehe. I've never got the skill to match them cleverly, though. My sister works in a fashion design school (which I assume makes her more qualified in the subject than me) always stares at my outfit before I go out and tells me I just don't know how to match clothes, haha. Shes usually says things like, "Man! You're wearing all the wrong colors at the same time, different textures and the baaaaag ..." Silence. But I don't get changed, I just leave and try to work it (kind of), as Tyra would say, hehe.

I have no idea who Rachel Zoe is. I'll google her.

Have a fun weekend, Jill! :)

That's Kate.

Miki I'm so glad to hear you're feeling good about your size - about who you are - and having FUN with fashion. That's all it's about. I'm so glad you don't change. Next time just tell her sister, there are no wrong colours - there's no wrong anything. That's the whole point.

I'm not really sure who she is, either. I might have even gotten her name wrong. We don't know her here in the UK -I think she's in LA and she's like a celebrity in her own right: she styles celebrities. I've also heard as she's very thin herself, she's been responsible for other celebrities getting unhealthily thing. I'm glad that you're not 'super overweight' but hope you're just feeling happy and healthy as you are. I had a bout of anorexia as a teenager and luckily got help before it got out of hand, and now I feel so strongly that we need to feel good how we are: a bit of meat on our bones is an important part of our survival. After all, we're only human.

Have a fun weekend, too! xx

I can't wait to hear the update on Elle-gate!

Couldn't agree more about Kit and her amazing and unique sense of style. And she carries it all off with a smile, which is just as infectious as her colourful clothes x

Kit consistently had amazing outfits at the last LFW.. she has a great sense of style

Totally agree about colours. Like a slightly awkward, marni-style colour combo. Good luck with Elle. x

Wow, she's combined colours that I'd normally hate together, and I LOVE it. Genius.

Oh, I completely agree. Kit has such an incredible sense of style. I love the way she puts things together. She definitely wears colour in the most perfect and unpredictable way. xx

I admire people who can mix colours. I've always worn neutral/black/grey colours. And even though I've been adding colourful clothes to my wardrobe, I still can't stay away from my black and grey basics. xxxx

I love how she's never afraid of mixing colour and texture even if they aren't conventionally put together, she's probably the most colourful person I know haha

Concerning Watergate, I mentioned this in my last email, but just wanted to voice it again. Carmen B hasn't learnt ANYTHING from the past experience. She may have credited you, but she doesn't seem to have even bothered to credit the other photo (of Alexa Chung)...

OOPS NOT WATERGATE HHAA.

She looks like she's dressed up as one of the Little Red Hat Ladies. But, in a good way. Nice outfit!

Also- best of luck with the ElleGate ridiculousness. That is so insane that such a big company would pull that kind of crap. I hope they pay you and publicly apologize to you, and to all of the people in your photographs. It probably won't happen, but I'll still hope for you!

Thanks guys.

Re: moi texting at LFW on Feb, I was either texting Shini saying 'I'm here, where are you?' or typing in a phone number to Jessops Holborn branch, my CF card from my Canon DSLR F*ed up.

@Shini - Westgate hahaha, well it's quite similar with the scandal case of P. Nixon etc.

I can see why you are featuring her - she has a great eye for color! Looking forward to learning more about her.

As for ELLEgate - would some screencaps of the PRE-edited post help? Because I happen to have some. :) Just sayin'!

lol. Shini, you are rewriting history!
Kit, what a beautifully unexpected color combo! I'll try that that tomorrow. But here in the State people are so conservative (style-wise) I'll get stares on the street. So I'll wear my French persona as an accessory!
