read all about it: galliano's underwear as outerwear

I didn't go to Paris Fashion Week because I had things on here in London (including my first commissioned fashion shoot as photographer! Can't wait to show you) so it was quite a delightful surprise when Mr. Dot woke me with today's Telegraph & a cup of tea (he's more of a morning person: we're talking 6:00 a.m. morning, even on weekend) & the cover story was a shot of a Dior model @ the Paris Galliano show wearing... a lace slip! Read the excellent article, by Hilary Alexander, right here.

This blogger has been reporting on this trend on the street since early last spring. I dubbed it the 'underwear as outerwear' phenomenon and noticed other bloggers wearing it, too. I'm finding creative ways to bring this look into fall, with a lot of black tights, ankle socks, over the knee socks, masculine touches like black oxfords or a long sleeved black top.. I've always believed designers get their inspiration from the street, but it's quite a thrill to see this process in action.

slip splash dior

Everything is connected, especially in fashion trends. Or memes, as an old (young) boyfriend used to call them. Ideas that seem to come to us and take a life of their own, like finding out that everyone you know around the world decided to wake up that morning and wear black and white. Or wear their underwear as outerwear, a phrase I've been using in the past few months and which Nicky of Lips of London referenced in her BRILLIANTLY WORDED POST on the recent Paris shows, from which I lifted this gorgeous fifties inspired Galliano number for Dior.

I had found a lovely example of this underwear-as-outerwear on a girl in the Tate, but it was a bit soft. Then I wore a slip for a week, and shot myself in the leg (slip splash). I'm looking forward to this filtering down to the high street, but between us girls: you've already got all the material you need right there at home. In your lingerie drawer!

giving them the slip

Some guy was screaming something in a bullhorn on Oxford Street, and these girls were trying to figure out what he was screaming. I like the eyelet lace slip like skirt.

When I saw this girl wearing a whole slip, I didn't feel as odd wearing a slip as a skirt (with a pink top). Actually: no one noticed in the least. At what point did wearing underwear as outerwear become normal? Or is it just, this is England and everyone assumes you're just eccentric?
