what's up, chuck

As I type this, the sun is out and I am wearing a little frock with bare legs, and all the girls in London have blossomed, like flowers. But at the time I took this - almost a month ago now - when I met Estelle for a coffee and chat, it was cold and we were still trying to find ways of staying cheerful. And pops of hot pink or red were the best way.

Can I ask: what is up with Converse Chucks at the moment? EVERYONE is wearing them. I have two pair - one were vintage when I bought them, back in the 20th century (my navy pair) and I bought a new cream pair about 7 years ago. I love them. And they've never really gone off trend, but for some reason.. I mean, yesterday, in the rain, I saw two unrelated girls pass by within minutes, both wearing little floral dresses, black tights, red Chucks.

I love the way Estelle re-works elements of her wardrobe all the time. I've seen her with that red clutch before. She doesn't spend a lot of money - she's really proud of that - but these new customised pair are brilliant. Converse have some kind of creative customising program, check it out.

It's funny: here everyone calls them Chucks (for Chuck Taylor) but in the States, we just call them Converse. CONVERSE.CO.UK. Whatever you call them, all I want to know is: what's your colour(s) and how do YOU wear them?

Ooo i'm defintely a converse girl, can't live without them. I prefer the plain white ones with the thin blue and red strip. Perfect for bumming around in jeans and a t-shirt, but equally cool with a calf-length skirt ala 50s style. xxx

Mine are red, glittery red for that, and I adore them. They are like my own version of Dorothy's ruby shoes and I wear them all the time. I recently told my man I was planning to get another pair, silver sequined ones, as soon as I find them in a store ;)

I have a pair of gray ones that are going on 10 years old!

Was heartbroken to find that I don't fit into my black high-top Cons from middle school (complete with doodles along the rubber edges) that I found in a closet in my parents' house.

Oh this is fascinating.. listen if you guys want, email me a shot of your shoes (jill@haybooks.com) - there's got to be something we can do with this, creatively.. virtually. Open to suggestions! ; )

Oh I have about 9 pairs of Converse (that's how I call them). 2 black, 1 red, 1 pink, 1 leopard. And then another 4 with different patterns that are not real Converse, but they still look nice.
They're my favourite shoes. And I LOVE how Estelle has reworked them. Converse + studs? I'm SO in!!!
I'll try to send you some pics! xxxx

Funny, I've always called them Chucks! Red and Black are my main stays, but I have recently been thinking about getting a couple other pairs and experimenting with them... I can't live with out my black hi-tops tho. I've had a pair constantly since I was little!

I've always ever called them Converse and thought the states called them chucks!

My brother was saying last year how he really wanted a pair of chuck taylors, confused I said 'what, converse?' and he said yeah.. chuck taylors.

Haha I think maybe it's a rebirth of the brand!

Oh my gosh Jill - I just got a brand new pair of Converse this week!!! Have some white ones that are getting nicely worn in but these are PURPLE!!! I LOVE them!! Posted a photo of them earlier in the week (Monday, I think). I always used to wear my Converse with jeans and hoodie - for down time - but I am starting to try them with skirts/dresses and am loving the look! :) xx

PS Such great photos :)

I don't have any converse (we call them converse in Leicester!) as they're so expensive, but I love the look of them, they're kind of like a cheatie shoe I think, they can look stylish without being uncomfy! :)

yeah ive noticed people seem to be getting back into them and away from crappy no name pumps and stuff. i've been wearing my cream ones alot of late, they remind me of oldish america. i wouldn't wear any bright colours these days though, just classic ones. i had pink ones when i was 17

I am OBSESSED with Converse (I call them that, although I'm in the UK). I bought my first pair a zillion years ago for a bargain and have been hooked ever since.
I own red, pink, turquoise, black, floral, polka dot, purple, raspberry and black with a sort of 'wallpaper' pattern in silver. Oh God, I need help. On the up-side, I have a sense for Converse bargains, and have paid full-price for exactly two of my pairs (including ones I have parted ways with).

Ha Mat, you're such a metrosexual ; ) If I didn't know you had the most gorgeous girlfriend.. Caramel, I am so impressed! You might be the winner for Most Obsessed.

Listen we have to do something Converse related, seriously.

Oh BTW: Someone just sent me something about a track that Paloma Faith, Graham Coxon and Bill Ryder-Jones collaborated on.. just released, called Desire- it's on the Converse website for free download now.

I've got all-black vintage ones that I picked up from the Camden Stables, new monochromes with a double fronted flap - that I live in - and all-white high tops with a gold zipper on the side - these only come out occasionally when I want to show off...

Blimey, I've never heard a Brit call them Chucks! I thought that was what they were called in the US. :/

Anon: that's interesting. I'm SURE it's only Brits who have called them Chucks. At least, to my face ; )

David: I want to see you in those bling bling ones. I'd PAY you to wear them, and I'd shoot you. With camera, of course!

Thanks Adrielle!

Listen: I really want to do something with this Converse thing. It's amazing that everyone not just has a pair - but really has emotional feelings about theirs. They're like our little pets..
